Councillor Heather Smith was elected to Northamptonshire County Council at a by-election on 3 May 2007. She served as Leader of the Council from May 2016 until March 2018. She has lived with her husband in the Oundle area for more than 30 years.

Her professional experience includes 20 years working as a senior manager for BT and 10 years as a successful business woman until her retirement.

As a County Councillor, she gets involved in a range of issues within Oundle and the 22 villages in her division and takes specific interest in the condition of roads, rights of way and traffic calming. From 2007 to 2009 she, as a member of the Children and Young People's Scrutiny Committee and then Deputy Scrutiny Champion with specific responsibility for growth in the county and as such attended all scrutiny committees.
